Exploring and Stretching the Power of Pastel

  • Pickle Street School Studio 2980 134th Avenue Hopkins, MI, 49328 United States (map)

with Teri Utz Bersée

  • Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14, 2024

  • 9 a.m. - noon, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (1 hour lunch break)

  • $225

Soft Pastels provide the most direct flow of pigment from human hand to paper of almost any medium. That makes using soft pastels very exciting! In this 2-day workshop, you will explore many ways to paint with and maneuver this wonderful medium. Beyond choosing a good subject, creating a pleasing composition and recording proper values, we will practice and experiment with basic mark-making practices.  We will compare works using certain marks and practices of both traditional and abstract pieces and try our hands at both, finishing at least one small painting on the first day.

On the second day, we will review, explore, and practice more (maybe forcing you to leave some previous habits behind!).... and complete at least one other painting on that final day.  Be prepared to think out of the box and add new techniques to your painting process! You may bring your own photos - that you've taken - to use on the second day (subject to discussion with instructor) for your final painting(s).

MATERIALS TO BRING:

Students will provide their own materials. A supply list will be sent out prior to the workshop.

Contact Pickle Street School Studio to register.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

As many artists will tell you, their heightened observation skills work both as curator of beautiful subject matter and as a proficient guide when working, and for that Teri is grateful.  She has always followed nature, architecture and human and animal forms to create landscapes, portraits and still life (usually in oil or soft pastel).  In 2008, after working in the commercial art and design field for over 30 years, she established a studio providing art classes for children and adults, which she maintained for ten years. Teri has won numerous local and regional awards for her art, and is now adding national level competitions.  One commissioned work now hangs permanently in the Holocaust Museum at the Shrine of Maximilian Kolbe, Libertyville IL.  She enjoys the challenge and reality of plein air painting, continues to take portrait commissions and continues to give back to her community by donating to special events and providing art classes.
