From a recent attendee:

“I just took the first of what I hope to be many workshops with Richard Jordan. The skills he demonstrates as painter are paralleled by his outstanding teaching prowess. He provided numerous examples from his own paintings revealing the successes and challenges met perusing his technique. Then, in a very concentrated period of time, he demonstrated an entire painting, reinforcing what he had pointed out to us in his examples. Finally, in the plein air setting, he provided wonderful and attentive guidance to the students scattered across the landscape of a local farm. If I could use one word to describe him it would be “generous “. He obviously pours hours into his preparation; he gives freely of his knowledge and insight. Finally, his positive attitude, and open friendly demeanour encourages his students and grants them the skills to succeed.”

The old adage, “It’s not what you paint, but how you paint it,” is especially true when working en plein air. Fleeting time demands a shorthand approach, one that dissects a landscape into its simplest forms, then uses the power of suggestion to say more with less. Simply copying the scene is not the goal. An artist must strive to capture the mood of the landscape to have a meaningful work of art. In this workshop, Richard Jordan, director of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan, will demonstrate the methods and artistry he employs to bring a plein air painting to life. He will give classroom and on-site demonstrations.

Artists will work on-location both days, where Richard will work individually with each artist.
